Detailed map of Anjou
Map of Anjou
The historic region of Anjou comprises the whole of today's Maine-et-Loire département, plus a small part of southern Mayenne and Sarthe, western Indre-et-Loire and northern Vienne, as well as part of the Pays de la Loire, Tourraine and Loire Valley. The Anjou and Angevine region thus includes the towns of Angers, its capital, and Saumur, famous for its wines, its cavalry school and its château, whose elegant silhouette is reflected in the Loire.

Other Anjou towns of note for their heritage and history include Richelieu to the east, Montreuil-Bellay and Doué-la-Fontaine to the south of Saumur, Baugé, le Lude and la Flèche to the northeast, Segré and le Lion-d'Angers to the northwest, Cholet and Saint-Florent-le-Vieil to the southwest. Other towns include Chalonnes sur Loire, Saumur Val de Loire and Beaufort en Anjou.
Anjou is famous for its many châteaux, many of which are listed as châteaux de la Loire. During your stay, you can discover the Château de Montsoreau and its conceptual art exhibition, the Château de Saumur and its horse museum, and of course the Château d'Angers of King René and the tapestry of the Apocalypse.
A little further along the Loire, you'll discover other remarkable châteaux, including Montreuil-Bellay on the Thouet, the 7-storey Brissac, Plessis-Bourré in Écueillé, Le Lude, considered the most northerly of the Loire châteaux, and Baugé with its apothecary.
Anjou also boasts a wealth of other sites of architectural and historical interest. The hillsides along the Loire, for example, are home to a number of troglodyte dwellings, particularly in the Saumur region, in the communes of Souzay, Dampierre and Turquant. Underground sites to visit in Anjou include the troglodyte village of Rocheménier and the troglodyte houses of Forges, as well as the ancient Falun quarries in Doué-la-Fontaine, the Saut au Loup mushroom beds in Montsoreau, and the fine Loire bubbles wine cellars in Saint-Hilaire-Saint-Florent. And don't miss Fontevraud Abbey.
Other not-to-be-missed sites in Anjou include religious architectural treasures such as the Royal Abbey of Fontevraud, the Bourgonnière chapel in Bouzillé, the Notre-Dame de Cunault priory in Gennes-Val-de-Loire, and Saint-Maurice cathedral in Angers.
Museums of all kinds can also be visited in the various towns of Anjou, from the Musée des Blindés et du Cadre Noir in Saumur to the Musée des Beaux-Arts in Angers, the Musée de l'ardoise in Trélazé, or the Musée du Textile et de la Mode in Cholet.
You can also discover Anjou by strolling through its most charming villages: Montsoreau, Chênehutte-Trèves-Cunault, le Vieil-Baugé, Louerre, le Coudray-Macouard, Béhuard, or Montreuil-Bellay.
For family outings, head for the Bioparc zoo in Doué-la-Fontaine, Terra Botanica in Angers, the Cadre Noir in Saumur, the Cap Loire discovery park in Montjean-sur-Loire, the Petite Couère reconstructed village in Chatelais, or Natural Parc in Saint-Laurent-des-Autels.
