The history of the île de Ré soap factory

The adventure of Savonnerie Île de Ré began on March 1, 2014, under the aegis of a close-knit family: Jean-Pierre, Marie-Paule, and their two daughters, Charlotte and Marie-Julie. Driven by a shared passion, with the unfailing support of their teams, they are committed to offering you products of excellence as well as flawless service.

Located in the heart of the artisan village of Loix, on the Île de Ré, the Loix et Savons" soap factory is proud to be the the only soap-making workshop on the Île de Ré..

Each product is truly "Made in France" and manufactured in the heart of the soap factory on the Île de Réin close collaboration with local producers.

An artisanal manufacturing process

Unique artisanal soap factory in the retais regionLoix & Savons is a young company that pays tribute to ancestral know-how. Specializing in the production of donkey milk soap, the workshop obtains its milk from theasinerie de l'île de Réalso known for its mythical donkeys in breeches, which delight children in the Barbette park in Saint-Martin-de-Ré. The soap factory uses pure donkey milk, without any prior processing. To make the soaps, the milk is blended with natural preservatives, 100% natural fragrances and softening agents such as sweet almond oil and shea butter. Partnerships with other local producers enable the Paullet family, founders of Loix & Savonsto offer soaps made with honey, samphire or goat's milk. The soap factory has also developed a wide range of cosmetics for the whole family based on donkey's milk, taking advantage of the many nutritional virtues of this milk reputed to be one of the closest to mother's milk.

The Loix & Savons" soap factory opens the doors of its artisanal workshop to you, free of charge, to discover the secrets behind the production of donkey's milk soaps. Find out more about the different stages in the manufacturing process, the origin of donkey milk, and the different ways in which the soap factory works with producers on the Ile de Ré.

Visit schedule :

  • July & August: Every weekday at 2.30pm, without prior reservation (subject to availability).
  • September to All Saints' Day: Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2.30pm, free admission subject to availability.
  • April, May and June: Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2.30pm, admission without reservation.
  • Ticket office in Loix: Opens at 1.30pm on the day of the tour.

This visit will immerse you in the magic of the artisanal soap factory on the Ile de Ré. Welcomed by our dedicated craftsmen, you'll be introduced to traditional soap-making techniques.

The first stage of the visit will take you to the production workshop, where you can observe the different phases of production. You'll also discover the artisanal methods used to perfume the other soaps in our collection. Every moment of this tour will be accompanied by the enlightened explanations of our soap-making expert. She'll be happy to answer any questions you may have, making this a real opportunity to exchange knowledge.

The artisanal soaps offered by the savonnerie île de Ré are the fruit of meticulous work, combining natural ingredients and artisanal techniques, to offer you an incomparable sensory experience. Our soaps are enriched with vegetable oils, carefully selected natural preservatives and contain no palm oil.

You'll find donkey's milk, goat's milk and vegetable soaps to awaken your senses and pamper your skin. You'll also find donkey milk shampoos, face and body creams with numerous benefits, and a range of organic essential oils. You'll also find soaps, liquid and solid soap packs, balms, highly moisturizing creams and exfoliating care products, with or without fragrance. What's more, enriched with fatty acids, you'll find a whole range of soaps of natural origin promising hydration and softness for all skin types. The history of vine-growing on the island dates back to the 13ᵉ century: cultivated by the Cistercian monks of the Châteliers abbey, it continued to exist on the island long after their departure driven by the Wars of Religion.
