The Ré bee

An emblematic honey factory on the Ile de Ré

In the village of Loix, in the north of the island, l'Abeille de Ré is a family-run honey factory created by Aldo François, himself the son of a beekeeper and passionate about his profession. As well as producing artisanal honey, he is committed to raising public awareness of his art and the cause of bees. Transmission is his vocation. The apiaries are located on the Ile de Ré and in Charente-Maritime, near Saint-Jean d'Angély. They enable L'Abeille de Ré to offer 6 different honeys, with flavors and textures that vary according to the specificities of the foraging area. The most typical honey from the Ile de Ré is an all-flower honey, including marsh and coastal flowers. It is distinguished by its fruity, tangy flavors, rich mouthfeel and fine crystallization. While you're camping on the Ile de Ré, perhaps you'd like to take part in the adventure by sponsoring a beehive? At the end of the year, you'll receive a surprise that will remind you of your wonderful vacations on the island!

Visits, workshops and events at the beekeeper's in Rennes

How would you like to learn a little more about bees, hives, honey and the beekeeping profession during your stay at the Slow Village campsite? The Abeille de Ré honey house offers tours, events and workshops on the world of bees for all ages! A guided tour of the apiary and honey house, if the season is right, will give you the opportunity to watch a honey extraction followed by a tasting session. Explanatory panels also allow you to freely visit the estate and observe the ballet of foraging bees. With the "apiary walk" animation, the Abeilles de Ré honey factory offers visitors a 1500-meter walk along the coastal path to reach the hives, a snack, a demonstration and presentation of the beekeeping profession, then a return to the honey factory to observe the extraction and taste the products of the hive. For your children, the honey house also organizes several workshops: a discovery workshop from the age of 4, ideal for younger children, and two workshops focusing respectively on bees and the beekeeping profession for children aged 5 to 12.

The Abeilles de Ré honey house is, of course, a place for gourmets, where you can discover a wide variety of artisanal products made from the products of the hive. Alongside flower, forest and acacia honeys, gourmets will find honey confectionery, nonnettes, nougats, vinegars, mustards, beers, mead and soap. The virtues of honey and other products of the hive are of course put to good use by the honey house, which has created a range of treatments and cures based on royal jelly, pollen and propolis. The Honey Shop is open every day from early April to late September, and every day except Sunday from October to March. It is located on chemin Corps de Garde in Loix, less than 15 km from our campsite. You can get there by car in less than 20 minutes, and by bike in 35 minutes. Lilleau des Niges nature reserve

The Ile de Ré is located on a major bird migration route between Africa and the Arctic. Its natural areas are therefore particularly valuable, as they are likely to be home to a large number of bird species. At the tip of the island, in the heart of the Fier d'Ars marshes and mudflats, the Lilleau des Niges reserve was created in 1980 with the aim of preserving this biodiversity.

A historic tradition on the Ile de Ré, salt farming sustained the territory from the Middle Ages until the end of the 19ᵉ century. Gradually abandoned over the course of the 20ᵉ century, the salt pans gave way to the marshes and mudflats that form the Lilleau des Niges nature reserve, and are home to precious populations of migratory birds.

Île de Ré wines

The history of vine-growing on the island dates back to the 13ᵉ century: cultivated by the Cistercian monks of the Châteliers abbey, it continued to exist on the island long after their departure driven by the Wars of Religion. By 1950, vine-growing was at its peak on the island, occupying more than 2,000 hectares. It was also at this time that the island's winegrowers decided to form a wine cooperative.
