Surfing on the Ile de Ré

If the Charente coastline is a popular destination for surfers, the Ile de Ré is no exception, offering some of the finest spots in the area. The swell breaks in the south-west of the island, making a large number of beaches ideal for surfers of all levels. The variety of conditions means that whether you're a beginner or a seasoned surfer, you're sure to find the spot that's right for you. Some spots can be surfed in all seasons, others catch the swell better in summer, while others become more accessible to beginners in summer. If you're coming to spend your vacation in an open-air hotel on the island of Ré to surf, or if you'd like to take advantage of your stay to learn how to surf, discover the island's best spots and their specificities with our top 5.

The best surf spots on the Ile de Ré

The Grenettes spot in Sainte-Marie-de-Ré

Arguably the best-known spot on the Ile de Ré, Les Grenettes can be reached in less than 15 minutes by bike and 10 minutes by car from our Slow Village. Its long waves on reef are perfect for beginners and longboarders.

Le Petit-Bec at Les Portes-en-Ré

In the north-west of the island, Petit-Bec beach is also a popular beach break for surfers of all levels: its slightly hollow wave is accessible to intermediate surfers. Surf schools also offer lessons.

Gros-Joncs beach at Bois-Plage-en-Ré

A mythical spot on the Bois-Plage-en-Ré coastline, Gros-Joncs is perfect for learning to surf. The beach borders a surfing and swimming area, for the pleasure of the whole family. It's also one of the closest spots to the campsite, just 3 km away.

The Lizay wave

In the north of the island, some twenty kilometers from Slow Village, the Lizay wave is well worth a visit for surf enthusiasts in search of a thrill. Hollow and technical, the wave is very localized, so it's best to surf during off-peak hours, as the spot is saturated with 10 or more surfers.

The Pergola spotlight

A fast, powerful beach break just 8 km from our campsite, the Pergola wave is reserved for experienced surfers, for whom it promises great sensations. The prospect of tubes attracts surfing enthusiasts. The spot can be dangerous for beginners.
